As you get involved with the special education bureaucracy, it is important that you become familiar with many of the abbreviations used. Some of the more widely used abbreviations are as follows:

ASD - Autism Spectrum Disorder

BSEA - Bureau of Special Education Appeals

DOE - Department of Education

FAPE - Free and Appropriate Public Education

IDEA - Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004

IEP - Individualized Education Program

LRE - Least Restrictive Environment

NCLB - No Child Left Behind

N1 Form - Notice of Proposed School District Action

PAC - Parent Advisory Council

PDD - Pervasive Developmental Disorder

PDD/NOS - Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified

PQA - Program Quality Assurance

SPED - Special Education

504 Plan - An Accommodation Plan for a student in the regular (as opposed to the special) education curriculum
